Vegan Week ~ An Introduction

by kitchenarian on August 14, 2011

I have wondered many times what it would feel like to be vegan. Could I really give up the love of my life, goat cheese? What would I do if I couldn’t add fresh milk to my morning espresso? Where would I be without real butter? I love butter!

Back in January when I set up a few cooking goals for myself for the new year, I listed vegan cuisine. I wondered what it would be like to be vegan for a week. When I started The Kitchenarian, my purpose was to expand my cooking knowledge, explore new cuisines and keep a journal of my experiences.

So I’ve had this vegan idea brewing in the back of my mind for a while and recently thought that if I was going to do this thing, I should do it while all the fresh summer produce was still plentiful. So, guess what? It is vegan week here at The Kitchenarian. It’s a week long foray into the world of veganism. I am giving up all meat, seafood and dairy and adopting a diet of of fruits, vegetables, grains, beans and nuts for seven days….168 hours…10,080 minutes….

I already know I can’t do this alone, so I have asked some experts to help me out. Throughout the week, I will have guest posts from some dedicated vegan and food conscious bloggers:

JL from JL Goes Vegan
Tiffany from Como Water
Nikki from The Tolerant Vegan

I am so excited to share their stories and recipes with you. I’ve often wondered what makes an individual give up entire food groups in their diet. Is it more than a strong belief in animal rights issues or personal health issues? I believe it is. I am excited to start this culinary journey.

It will be a fun and delicious week. I will publish a new post every day for the next seven days. There is lots to share and talk about as I explore this new food lifestyle. Please join me.

Goodbye butter, good-bye brie cheese. I will see you in 7 days! And, yes, if you are wondering, there is tofu in my future….

I am truly excited for this. I have experimented with vegetarian diet in the past. I don’t consider myself a vegetarian but we (my husband and I) don’t eat a ton of meat or poultry. We often eat vegetarian meals but I often wonder what it would be like to completely give up all animal-produced products. I’m really looking forward to your posts this week!

I can’t wait to follow along with you for 7 days. I’ve wondered the same thing but have never really decided to try this out for real. Good luck exploring. I imagine it will introduce all sorts of new recipes and ingredient options.

I cannot wait to see how it goes. I use Mama Pea of Peas and Thank you for any vegan recipes I have ever tried. Normally once my husband gets wind we go to more vegetarian dishes than vegan but they can be delicious. Cannot wait to hear how it goes.

Good luck! I have a “Goaty Cashew Cheese” recipe that I love on my blog. I will warn you, it’s not goat cheese.. BUT.. when you mix it into your salads, pasta, soups, pizza… it will give you the satisfaction and round out the dish… I hesitate to call it cheese because it’s not.. but it’s super good! I hope you try it.

you are going to feel fantastic at the end of your week! What a wonderful idea! I’m a former vegan but I always feel so great on a vegan diet.
