The Greek Festival

I was feeling very Greek this weekend and it was great.  I always know that summer has finally arrived with the opening of the annual Greek Festival in Richmond, Virginia.  For 35 years, the local Greek Orthodox church has held this fundraiser in June and treated the city to their amazingly delicious Greek cuisine.

So, on Saturday, the whole family piled into the car and headed to the city.  I don’t think any of us ate any breakfast, because we didn’t want anything to stand in the way of trying all the delicious food at the festival.  And try it all, we certainly did.  Forks were flying as each of us sampled all the different Greek food. Amongst the five of us, this is what we ate:


Spanikopita – savory pastry made with spinach and feta and wrapped in phyllo.
Tiropita – a phyllo pastry filled with a cheese and egg mixture; often called cheese pie.
Souvlakimarinated meat grilled on a skewer.  We sampled both the chicken souvlaki and the pork souvlaki.
Pastichio – made with pasta, beef and béchamel sauce; often described as Greek lasagne.

Gyro Sandwich

Moussaka – made with beef, eggplant and béchamel sauce
Gyro – sandwich made with lamb, tomatoes, lettuce and tzatziki sauce and rolled in flatbread.
Yahni – Grecian green Beans

Galaktoboureko – a Greek dessert made with custard and phyllo

After eating lunch under one of the many tents, we made our way to the stage to watch the entertainment up close. There was live Greek music and Greek dancers. After watching a while, we ventured inside the church and walked around the Agora Marketplace.  There was jewelry, clothing, Greek olive oil, art and lots of other items for sale.  Sous Chef particularly liked this basket of colorful jewelry.

The church was open and people could take one of the scheduled tours or just walk around. We decided just to go in and look around a bit.  Here are a few pictures from inside this beautiful Greek Church.

As we were leaving and moving towards the far side of the event, we saw the volunteers cooking the souvlaki.  This is where the real work was going on.  It was so hot over by the grills I could hardly stand it long enough to take a couple of pictures, but it certainly didn’t seem to bother the cooks!  Because after all, it really is all about the food.

Sounds like fun! Love the shot of all the meat on the grill! A Gyro sounds good right about now!
