I was in the grocery store yesterday picking up a few things while our city was bracing for yet another winter storm. As I was making my way through the produce section, I glanced up and out of the corner of my eye, I spotted what looked like blackberries. Knowing that couldn’t really be true, I moved in that direction and was pleased and surprised to see little packages of the sweet fruit stacked up together. Bundled up in my winter garb I was, just for a second, transported to sunnier and warmer thoughts.
I gingerly picked them up for closer examination. They looked and smelled, how should I say, perfect. While the price was close to the cost of buying fine wine, gold and rare jewels, I could not stop thinking about the luxury of biting into my favorite blackberry galette amidst a winter storm. So I bought them, and today I made my favorite summer dessert.
I wrote a blog this past summer and gave the recipe for an updated version of my grandmother’s blackberry cobbler. So if you want the recipe, click here and you will be transported back to the summer months where blackberries were plentiful, the days were long and hot and I was baking blackberry galette.
Enjoy!

Love the post…. reminds me of myself in the supermarket, always looking for something new or different….Galette looks delich:)
This is just beautiful. We are bracing for a mild winter storm here in Pittsburgh and I too am craving those summer flavors. Thanks for sharing.
I just have to look away from the fresh berries… It means dessert – and no one to eat it but me. If I gave in, I’d be one of those of people that have to be cut out of the house to get them to the hospital.
The Galette looks wonderful, though 🙂
Oh that’s gorgeous! I can almost smell it. 🙂
I wish I could find some fresh berries. I was at the store yesterday and they only had blueberries … a handful (literally) were $5.99 … can’t wait for summer! 🙂
So beautiful, I can see how it would bring thoughts of summer. Yum!
Hahahaha! I love it! Summer fruit in the winter IS really like buying rare jewels, no? But I’m with you, there’s only so many pears and apples one can eat!
I know they are so expensive..but is it worth it once in a while..totally yeah!!!
It looks so good, and I really can’t wait for summer!
I love blackberries! There used to be hundreds of bushes in the back of my parents house and we always used to pick them by the bushels in the summer. This recipe looks scrumptious and def makes me get cabin fever!
The fresh blackberries from our vacation place in VT seem so far away! We pick in August and September and then make jam, wine, pies and all sorts of other things with them.
I’ll have to see if there are any kicking around in the freezer!

You are making me dream of summer! I love rustic desserts.

Gorgeous! We are hitting a ‘warm up’ today; it was 14 I think. Seeing berries like this is very hopeful! Sounds beyond yummy my friend. Foodgawker is calling for this photo…
Fabulous treat and decidedly fast-n-easy to make! With little sous chefs under my feet, I can rely on the rustic simplicity of it. I loved your story and how it reminded you of summer under the threat of another cold storm… I’ll send some California sunshine your way. Thank you for the recipe.
What a luxurious treat for January! Your Blackberry Galette is gorgeous!
Good find on those blackberries – I can’t even find good ones in season! Your recipe sounds great!
I walked into my grocers and there were blackberries and blueberries – on sale. Now I am wishing I boght two pints of the blackerries (bought one of each) because I sure could use some summer in my kitchen! I love the ease of the recipe and the free rustic form. Inviting.
