Happy Birthday Sous Chef!

♫ ♫ ♪ happy birthday to you,  ♫ ♪ ♫ happy birthday to you……

Today is Sous Chef’s 21st birthday. Even though she is back at school, I have decided to let her write this post and she doesn’t even know it. In celebration of the birthday girl, I am going to share some of Sous Chef’s writings over the past two years starting with her very first post….

June 19, 2010 – Behind every great chef is a sous chef, that bright-eyed and eager helper who takes some of the pressure off the always multi-tasking chef. That is how I found myself working alongside my mother in the kitchen for as long as I could be more help to her than hindrance. I’ve measured out countless ingredients and stuck fingers in every bowl of delicious batter as well, much to the chagrin of my mother. Now a college student and a bit more experienced, my dual role as the Kitchenarian’s daughter and sous-chef has grown to be even more of a partnership than my younger, original attempts. I still do not move with the graceful ease that my mother does as she weaves delectable wonders from her fingertips, but I can hold my own in the kitchen thanks to her tutelage…

June 30, 2010 – Fresh strawberries on their own are already the perfect treat, but I’m prone to dress them up a bit for the occasion. They’re the best addition to some vanilla yogurt and granola for breakfast. Throw them in a bowl with some blueberries and sprinkle just a pinch of sugar on top for a sweet snack or dessert. Or, for the ultimate indulgence, melt some dark chocolate and dip the strawberries in the bowl.

December 4, 2010 – I am still away from home and dreaming of food. I can hear the holiday music playing in the background of our kitchen, and above it the whirring of the food processor as the red and white peppermint blends to a sugary pink. Then, lifting the lid, that cool smell of peppermint as it’s sprinkled on top the molten layers of chocolate spread out on the counter. It’s a beautiful masterpiece of marbled cream and brown, accented with the pink peppermint. The hustle of the kitchen is softened by the merriment we find in being together and cooking together, shuffling through the powdered sugar left on the floor as we stack more and more dirty dishes in the sink…

May 16, 2011 – Sous Chef here today, back from school and in the kitchen again for the summer! Muffins have always been some of my favorite things to bake, and so some of you may not be surprised to see me again whipping up this week’s Monday’s Muffin…

May 31, 2011 – There are times when you crave sweet and simple. With the holiday weekend, I was fortunate enough to have a lazy and relaxing long weekend, leaving me with ample time to make a dessert…

June 16, 2011 – Near the end of a lazy, do-nothing summer day, the Kitchenarian approached me with the task of baking something sweet. While I am sure it was a plot to keep me occupied and do something productive that day…

Chocolate Crinkle Cookies

August 9, 2011 – I know the Kitchenarian has left a few notes here pertaining to my whereabouts, but I’ll say that I’m currently in Northern England, traveling around a lot day by day and seeing so many amazing sites…

Greetings From Across The Pond!

September 19, 2011 – (from Sous Chef’s travel blog) As my stay in Oxford comes to a close, I am left thinking about the locations I will miss the most, places I have filled with many happy memories in these six weeks. One such location is The Eagle and Child, a famous pub of Oxford…

The Eagle and Child

December 9, 2011 – Bonjour! Guten Tag! Buongiorno! I’ve been absent from the blog, but it’s taken me a while to recover from the whirlwind that was three months abroad in Europe. I had the most fantastic time of my life but am glad to be at home and back in the kitchen again…

Buttered Rum Cookies

January 16, 2012 – I’ve packed up my bags and said my goodbyes, ready once more to immerse myself in my studies and the life I love over at my school. As a farewell party of sorts, some friends invited the Kitchenarian and I over for afternoon tea. I’ll have to admit that I was never a tea drinker until I spent seven weeks in England this past fall, but now I’m hooked! So what does one bring to a tea party when there will already be scones, cucumber sandwiches, and tiny biscuits?…
