Greetings From Across The Pond!

by sous-chef on August 9, 2011

I know the Kitchenarian has left a few notes here pertaining to my whereabouts, but I’ll say that I’m currently in Northern England, traveling around a lot day by day and seeing so many amazing sites. Of course, I’ve also been eating a lot of starchy, hearty food up here in the UK – it’s much colder here than the humid August I know my family is having back at home.

When I have the time I’m going to do my best to write here about my encounters with food. After all, it’s one of the things I’ve anticipated most about my semester studying abroad!

Here is a link to my travel blog, Grace’s Places, including an article about the coffee shop called The Elephant House in Edinburgh, Scotland. Not only did I have a delicious meat pie there, but it has certain other magical significance as well, to all you Harry Potter fans out there. Click here to be transported all the way to Scotland to read about this famous coffee shop.

Cheers!

I hope you are staying safe over there. I know the problems are centered around London but take care.

Thanks for your concerns! Luckily I am pretty far away from London right now and won’t be going there anytime soon. I am hoping things will calm down before I get there!

We ate at the Elephant House last summer. Try the Last Drop Tavern for delicious haggis and the best beer I’ve ever had! Enjoy your trip in beautiful Scotland! Wish I were there! Thanks for the great blog!

I am a student in edinburgh but live just outside london. I have been reading this blog and can’t help but recommend a few places for you to go. At the bottom of Dundas street there is an amazing cupcake shop http://www.cuckoosbakery.co.uk/ . On west Nicholson St. there is a mosque out of the back of which volunteers make and sell curry for charity. It has been voted the second best curry in scotland by critics.
When you get to london there is a book shop in Portobello called books for cooks where they only sell cook books. They publish their own book every year which is a compilation of what they think are the best recipes. Everyday they cook three courses from a chosen book which they sell for £6.50 for all three courses they only make enough for about 40 everyday so get there early. People begin queueing from dead on 12 as it s so good. http://www.booksforcooks.com/index.html

Thanks so much for the recommendations! Now I have many new places to explore! The books for cooks sounds like such a fun thing to do. As I’m in Oxford now, do you have any recommendations there too?
