A Trip To The West End Farmer’s Market

by kitchenarian on May 29, 2011

Sous Chef and I went to the farmer’s market this weekend. Our little city is comprised of a dozen or so small farmer’s markets throughout the area. This particular morning our excursion led us to the West End Farmers Market.  While not a very large market, there was a nice variety from which to choose.

The produce was beautiful and the farmers were helpful and friendly.  Our trip was cut short by a mid-day downpour of rain, but I had enough time to take some pictures and find a few treasures to take home.

The sweet basil was abundant so we grabbed a bunch.  And, in my opinion, a trip to the farmer’s market is not complete without fresh goat cheese.  This time we chose the peppercorn variety.

Other items available for sale at the farmer’s market included farm fresh eggs, grass fed beef, seafood, pies, flowers, and jewelry.

I was very excited about these chioggia beets pictured below.  Very small in size, when cut open they have alternating circles of pink and white rings and are so beautiful; these are often referred to as candy cane beets.  I bought some of these as well as some golden beets and have plans to make a salad with the beets and some goat cheese.  I am very excited to try these new varieties; I love beets.  Hopefully I will get some good pictures and can share that with you in the near future.

I LOVE your photos! Gorgeous!

I can’t wait to share with you photos of the farmer’s stands in Macedonia… I’ll be there in September, and will report via pictures. 🙂
